What Is Visitation?

The amount of time allocated to a parent to be with his or her child is called “parenting time.” Courts often utilize a standard or minimum order determined by the court’s local rules. For example, many courts utilize a standard schedule similar to every other weekend and every Wednesday evening. Standard schedules are written to provide stability for children while maintaining or further developing the child’s bond with both parents.

While courts typically have a standard schedule, it is not ordered in every case. For example, if a guardian ad litem is appointed, the recommendation may contain a specific schedule as recommended by the guardian ad litem. No matter what the court orders for parenting time, the parents are always encouraged to be flexible and work off their own schedule and plan. So long as the parents are in agreement and working the schedule out together, the court does not get involved. It is presumed that two parents determining their own schedule of parenting time is better for the child as it is more flexible and is ever-changing based on the child’s needs and desires.
